England's World Cup Semifinal Record: A Look Back

England's journey in the World Cup semifinals has been a mixed bag, marked by both triumph and disappointment on the sport's grandest stage.
The Three Lions have reached the final four of the FIFA World Cup on three occasions throughout their history. Their most significant moment came in 1966, on home soil, where they defeated Portugal 2-1 to secure a place in the final. This victory propelled them to their sole World Cup title later that year.
However, the subsequent semifinal appearances have not yielded the same glory. In 1990, during the Italia '90 tournament, England faced West Germany in a tense semifinal showdown. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with England ultimately losing 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout.
More recently, in 2018, England made another run to the semifinals at the Russia World Cup. They met Croatia in their penultimate match, but were defeated 2-1 after extra time, ending their hopes of reaching the final and challenging for the coveted trophy.
England's historical struggles in World Cup semifinals, particularly post-1966, suggest a psychological hurdle that has repeatedly tripped them up when on the precipice of a final.
