England's Dan Brown has issued an apology to his mother after being seen smoking a cigarette during his opening round at The Open Championship.

The 24-year-old golfer, competing in his first major championship, admitted that lighting up during play at Royal Birkdale was a misstep and acknowledged it was regrettable.

Brown, who is making his debut in golf's oldest major, stated that he had spoken to his mother about the incident. He expressed his apologies to her, indicating that his actions were not something she would approve of.

The decision to smoke during a professional round drew attention, and Brown has since addressed the matter, aiming to put it behind him as he continues his tournament campaign.

💬 SideLine Take

While a golfer's personal habits are their own business, lighting up mid-round at a major championship is a rather dated and unprofessional look. Brown's apology is a good start, but perhaps a more complete rebranding away from such an image is in order.
