Fiji Scrumhalf Kuruvoli Receives Four-Week Ban for On-Field Misconduct
Fiji scrumhalf Simione Kuruvoli has been handed a four-week suspension after being found guilty of physical abuse during his team's recent Nations Championship match against England. The incident led to a red card and a subsequent disciplinary hearing.
The disciplinary committee's decision follows a review of Kuruvoli's actions during the Nations Championship fixture, which saw Fiji suffer a heavy 73-8 defeat to England. The foul play occurred in first-half stoppage time, resulting in Kuruvoli being shown a red card by the match officials.
A statement released on Thursday confirmed the committee's findings, noting that the offense warranted a potential eight-week ban. However, Kuruvoli's admission of guilt for the foul play and his unblemished disciplinary record prior to this incident were taken into consideration.
These factors led to a significant reduction, with the committee applying a 50% discount to the initial potential suspension, resulting in the final four-week ban for the Fijian playmaker.
A four-week ban, even with a reduction, is a significant blow to Fiji's depth at scrumhalf. While self-reporting and a clean record are commendable, the severity of physical abuse on the field demands strict consequences.
