German Court Halts FIFA Ticket Resale Practices in World Cup Row
A German court has issued an injunction against FIFA, demanding an end to "manipulative processes" in the resale of World Cup tickets. The Frankfurt regional court has sided with Ticombo, a German online ticket resale site, which sought greater transparency in FIFA's secondary ticketing operations.
FIFA has been compelled to change its World Cup ticket resale methods following a court order in Germany. The Frankfurt regional court has granted a preliminary injunction requested by Ticombo, a domestic online platform specializing in ticket resales.
The ruling specifically targets FIFA's practices concerning commercial sellers of tickets. The court has instructed the governing body to cease facilitating ticket sales without ensuring buyers are informed about the identity and address of any commercial sellers in a timely manner before completing their purchase. This move aims to bring more transparency to the secondary market for event tickets.
According to reports, FIFA earns a 15% commission on transactions, benefiting from both the buyer and the seller. The injunction suggests that the current system may have lacked sufficient disclosure regarding the parties involved in these resales, particularly when commercial entities are acting as sellers.
FIFA's attempt to profit from ticket resales while obscuring seller details is a poorly judged move that has predictably drawn regulatory scrutiny.
