NCAA Women's Tournament to Adopt True Seeding for Top 16 Teams

The NCAA women's basketball tournament is set for a significant overhaul in its seeding process, with the top 16 teams slated to be ranked and placed in the bracket based on their overall strength starting next year. This move away from a more traditional seeding approach aims to create a more accurate representation of team strength at the highest level of the tournament.
This new methodology will see the top 16 teams evaluated and ranked objectively, ensuring that the most deserving teams, irrespective of their conference or location, occupy the premier seeding positions. This contrasts with the current practice which, while still aiming for strong seeds, may have had subtle influences beyond pure objective ranking for some of the very top spots.
Meanwhile, the men's selection committee will continue with its established practice. The top four seeds from each conference will still be strategically placed in separate regions of the men's bracket, a policy designed to prevent top conference rivals from meeting too early in the tournament and to ensure a wider distribution of top-tier teams across the landscape.
This is a welcome and overdue adjustment for the women's tournament, finally aligning the top seeds with a more meritocratic and transparent ranking system.
